Overview
Store Tags are physical NFC tags that you attach to your items to verify authenticity, prove ownership, and track provenance. When scanned with your phone, a Store Tag cryptographically confirms the item is genuine and hasn’t been tampered with. Why Store Tags?
Cryptographic Verification
Each tag uses AES-128 encryption to prove authenticity — no counterfeiting possible
Tamper Detection
Enterprise tags detect physical tampering with hardware tamper loops
Provenance Tracking
Build a complete verification history for every item over time
Risk Scoring
Automatic risk assessment flags suspicious activity like cloned tags or impossible travel
Estate & Insurance
Verified items strengthen insurance claims and estate documentation
Works Offline
Scan tags with any NFC-enabled smartphone — no app required
How Store Tags Work
Store Tags use NFC (Near Field Communication) technology — the same technology behind contactless payments. Each tag contains a unique identifier linked to your item in Storehouses.Verification Levels
What Happens When You Scan
- You tap your phone to the Store Tag on your item
- The tag transmits an encrypted message with a rolling counter
- Storehouses verifies the cryptographic signature server-side
- You see a verification result with a confidence score and risk assessment
Enterprise Store Tags (NTAG 424 DNA) use the same cryptographic protocol as contactless payment cards. Each scan produces a unique, non-replayable proof of authenticity.
Getting Started
Ordering Store Tags
Store Tags are available in three pack sizes:
To order:
1
Go to Verification
Navigate to storehouses.app/verification
2
Click 'Order Tags'
Select your preferred pack size
3
Complete Checkout
Purchase through Stripe Checkout (payment is secure and PCI compliant)
4
Receive Your Tags
Tags ship to your address and arrive pre-programmed and ready to use
Claiming a Tag
When your tags arrive, you need to claim them to link them to your account:1
Scan the Tag
Hold your phone near the Store Tag — your browser opens the claim page automatically
2
Sign In
Log in to your Storehouses account if not already signed in
3
Confirm Claim
The tag is now linked to your account and ready to assign to an item
Pairing a Tag to an Item
1
Go to Verification
Navigate to the Untagged Items tab on the Verification page
2
Find Your Item
Search or browse your untagged items
3
Click 'Pair Tag'
Hold the Store Tag near your phone when prompted to write the item’s registry ID
4
Attach the Tag
Physically attach the Store Tag to your item (adhesive backing, display case, storage container, etc.)
Verification Page
Access your verification dashboard at storehouses.app/verification. The page has four tabs:Scan Tag
Scan any Store Tag to verify an item. The scanner automatically detects the tag type and routes to the appropriate verification method. After scanning, you see:- Verification status — Verified, Caution, Warning, or Alert
- Risk score — 0.00 (no risk) to 1.00 (high risk) with color-coded indicator
- Confidence level — Based on tag type and verification method
- Anomaly flags — Any detected issues (counter rollback, impossible travel, rapid scanning)
Manage Tags
View all your Store Tags with their current status:- Active — Tag is paired with an item and working normally
- Disabled — You’ve temporarily disabled the tag
- Lost — You’ve reported the tag as lost
- Compromised — The system detected potential cloning or tampering
Untagged Items
Browse items in your portfolio that don’t have a Store Tag assigned. Use the “Pair Tag” button to assign a tag to any item.Event History
View a complete timeline of all verification events across your portfolio. Each event shows:- Timestamp and verification method
- Confidence level and risk score
- Any anomaly flags that were triggered
- The item and tag involved
Risk Scoring
Every scan produces a risk score from 0.00 (no risk) to 1.00 (high risk):What Affects the Score
Lowers risk (good):- Successful cryptographic verification (strongest signal)
- Valid rolling counter
- Tamper loop intact
- Scan location matches expected area
- Photo captured during verification
- Cryptographic verification failure (strongest negative signal)
- Counter rollback (suggests cloned tag)
- Tamper loop broken or changed
- Impossible travel (scanned in two distant locations too quickly)
- Rapid scanning (many scans in a short window)
Anomaly Detection
The system automatically monitors for suspicious patterns:Tag Lifecycle
Store Tags move through these states:- Provisioned — Tag manufactured and cryptographic keys loaded
- Shipped — Tag sent to you
- Claimed — You scanned and linked the tag to your account
- Active — Tag is paired with an item and in use
- Disabled — You temporarily disabled the tag (can be re-enabled)
- Lost — You reported the tag as lost (prevents unauthorized use)
- Replaced — Old tag replaced with a new one
- Compromised — System detected potential cloning (automatic)
- Decommissioned — Permanently retired
Staleness and Re-Verification
Verification confidence decays over time. Items should be re-scanned periodically:
Items that haven’t been verified within their staleness window show a notification on your dashboard prompting re-verification.
Enterprise Tags
Enterprise Store Tags use NTAG 424 DNA chips with advanced security features:Cryptographic Authentication
Each scan generates a unique, non-replayable proof using:- AES-128 CMAC — Military-grade message authentication
- Rolling counter — 24-bit counter increments with every scan (16M+ scan capacity)
- Session keys — Derived uniquely per scan from the master key and counter
- Encrypted UID — Tag identity encrypted in transit
Tamper Detection
NTAG 224 DNA StatusDetect tags include a hardware tamper loop — a physical wire that detects if the tag has been removed or the item opened. If the loop is broken:- The tag reports
tamperedstatus - Risk score increases significantly
- You receive a notification
Best Practices
Tag Your Most Valuable Items First
Tag Your Most Valuable Items First
Start with high-value items where provenance matters most — rare watches, fine art, precious metals, and collectible firearms.
Scan Regularly
Scan Regularly
Periodic scans build a verification history that strengthens provenance claims for insurance and estate purposes.
Keep Your Phone Updated
Keep Your Phone Updated
NFC scanning works best with up-to-date phone software. Ensure NFC is enabled in your phone settings.
Troubleshooting
Tag won't scan
Tag won't scan
- Ensure NFC is enabled on your phone (Settings → NFC)
- Hold the phone close to the tag for 2-3 seconds
- Try different positions — NFC antennas vary by phone model
- Remove phone case if it’s thick or metallic
- Some phones require the screen to be on and unlocked
Tag shows 'Unregistered'
Tag shows 'Unregistered'
The tag hasn’t been claimed yet. Scan it while logged in to claim it to your account.
Verification shows 'Caution' or 'Warning'
Verification shows 'Caution' or 'Warning'
Check the anomaly flags for details. Common causes:
- Scanning from a new location (geo mismatch) — usually resolves on next scan
- Long gap between scans (counter gap) — scan again to reset
- If counter rollback or impossible travel is flagged, contact support
Tag marked as 'Compromised'
Tag marked as 'Compromised'
This happens when 3+ anomalies are detected. Contact support with your tag details — if it’s a false positive, they can restore the tag.
FAQ
What if I sell an item with a tag?
What if I sell an item with a tag?
You can transfer tag ownership when selling an item. The verification history transfers with it, providing provenance to the buyer.
