# Editing Items

> Complete guide to updating and modifying items in your Storehouses portfolio

## Overview

Keep your portfolio accurate and up-to-date by editing item details, updating valuations, managing photos, and organizing items into collections and locations. Storehouses tracks all changes for complete audit trails.

## How to Edit an Item

  All edits are tracked in the item's edit history, so you can always see what changed and when.

## Editable Fields

### Basic Information

  For precious metals, market value updates automatically based on spot prices. Manual updates will be overridden by automatic pricing.

* Mint, series, year

**Luxury Watches**

* Brand, model, reference number
* Movement type, case material
* Condition, service history

* Gem type, carat weight
* Cut, color, clarity
* Setting details

**Wine & Spirits**

* Vintage, producer, region
* Storage conditions
* Fill level, label condition

**Fine Art**

* Artist, medium, dimensions
* Provenance, exhibition history
* Condition assessment

**Arms & Armor**

* Type, era, manufacturer
* Condition rating
* Matching numbers status

### Location & Organization

## Managing Photos

### Adding Photos

    Choose one or more photos from your device

**Supported formats**: JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP

**Maximum size**: 10 MB per photo

**Recommended**: Use well-lit, clear photos showing important details

## Managing File Attachments

Attach documents and files to individual items for complete documentation.

### Adding Attachments

### Removing Attachments

1. In edit mode, find the attachment in the files section
2. Click the **X** or delete button next to the file
3. Confirm deletion

  Deleted attachments cannot be recovered. Download important files before removing them.

<Tip>
  For account-level documents (wills, insurance policies, etc.), use [Secure Storage](/advanced/secure-storage) instead of item attachments.
</Tip>

### Reordering Photos

Change which photo appears as the primary image:

1. In edit mode, drag and drop photos to reorder
2. The first photo becomes the primary/cover image
3. Primary photo shows in grid view and thumbnails

### Removing Photos

1. In edit mode, hover over a photo
2. Click the **X** button in the corner
3. Confirm deletion

  Deleted photos cannot be recovered. Download important photos before removing them if you want to keep copies.

### Photo Best Practices

    Clear, well-lit photos help with identification and insurance claims. Take photos in natural light when possible.

    For valuable items, include photos of:

    * Front/obverse
    * Back/reverse
    * Hallmarks, signatures, or maker's marks
    * Serial numbers or certifications
    * Any damage or unique characteristics

    If an item's condition changes (wear, damage, restoration), add updated photos and note the date in the description.

    Photos are stored securely and never shared without your permission. However, avoid including identifiable background details if sharing items publicly.

## Bulk Editing

Update multiple items at once:

### Bulk Editable Fields

* **Location** - Move multiple items to a new location
* **Collection** - Add items to a collection
* **Tags** - Apply tags to multiple items
* **Insurance Value** - Update insurance values by percentage or amount

<Tip>
  Bulk editing is perfect for updating insurance values after an appraisal, or moving an entire collection to a new storage location.

## Updating Valuations

### Manual Market Value Updates

For items without automatic pricing:

1. Open the item in edit mode
2. Update the **Market Value** field
3. Add a note in the description about the valuation source
4. Save changes

The new value immediately affects:

* Individual item valuation
* Portfolio total value
* Collection values
* Location inventory values

### Insurance Value Updates

Update insurance values when:

* Getting new appraisals
* Coverage amounts change
* Market conditions shift significantly

  **Market Value**: Current estimated selling price

  These can differ. Insurance value is often higher to cover replacement costs.

### Tracking Value Changes

After updating values, view the impact:

* **Item detail page** shows percentage change from purchase price
* **Valuation history** chart shows value over time
* **Dashboard** reflects new portfolio total
* **Wealth Garden** updates to show growth trends

## Changing Locations

Move items between storage locations:

### Single Item

1. Edit the item
2. Change the **Location** field
3. Save changes

### Multiple Items

1. Use bulk edit to move several items at once
2. Or use the **Move** quick action from the item detail page

  Track items you're moving between locations by creating a temporary collection called "In Transit" until they reach their destination.

## Adding to Collections

Organize items by adding them to one or more collections:

1. Edit the item
2. In the **Collections** field, check the collections to add the item to
3. Save changes

An item can belong to multiple collections simultaneously.

**Example**: A vintage Rolex could be in both "Investment Watches" and "Everyday Wear" collections.

## Edit History & Audit Trail

Storehouses maintains a complete record of all changes:

### Viewing Edit History

1. Open an item's detail page
2. Scroll to the **Edit History** section
3. See chronological list of all modifications

### What's Tracked

Each edit record shows:

* Date and time of change
* Field(s) modified
* Previous value
* New value
* User who made the change (for shared portfolios)

  Edit history cannot be deleted or modified. This ensures the integrity of your records for insurance and tax purposes.

## Quick Edit Actions

Access common editing tasks quickly:

### From Item Detail Page

* **Edit** - Full editing mode
* **Update Value** - Quick value update dialog
* **Move** - Change location without full edit
* **Add to Collection** - Quick collection assignment

### From Dashboard

* **Right-click menu** (desktop) or **long-press** (mobile) on any item card
* Access quick actions without opening the detail page

## Common Editing Scenarios

* **Required fields** must have values before saving
* **Numeric fields** only accept valid numbers
